IRON BIKER NEWS – Column 1/99

Godiva

Lady Godiva, her long hair cascading like velvet to cover her charms, rode atop the finest horse completely naked through the market place of Coventry, England circa 1057. A diva of courage, she rode to protest the heavy taxation imposed upon the common folk by her powerful husband Leofric of Mercia. She believed it was unfair that nearly all of the townspeople under his control spent much of their waking hours prisoner to boring labor, sacrificing their own passions and creativity in an effort to feed, clothe and shelter themselves.

This noble, compassionate woman who found greater shame in oppression, than in simply revealing her naked beauty, had the guts to follow her ideology and took her husband to his word that if she rode naked on market day, he’d lift the taxes. An embarrassed and impressed Leofric kept his word and lifted the taxes.

Lady Godiva’s spirit of camaraderie and strength changed the quality of many lives, easing social differences and fostering freedom. We, as Lady Bikers also ride atop our "iron" horses, baring our souls unclothed from discrimination. We ride free in our femininity revealing our inner and outer beauty, our strength and life-giving nature.

As well, the spirit of camaraderie unites not only us women but also men and women bikers in that same sensual desire to experience our selves engaged in a shared passion for the road’s freedom. Each gender straddles the hot engine to take off and embrace the wind’s cleansing breath as it rushes through our hearts, erasing the day’s toil inching us closer to our dreams. The horse on which we ride knows that we are one.

The camaraderie we experience on the road is the height of sensuality. We may feel it differently, but we feel it, men and women alike. Every sense is engaged, wed in a perfect union called a-live. We bikers bare our souls buck-naked on the vulnerable highway called life, in protest to anything oppressive, as we ride in stoic solace, revving our engines towards chance.

We yearn for the road and are obsessed with our ride like a brilliant love affair. The ride provides a freedom, because we can evolve out there in the open; really be true to our soul. Our mind clears as our heart expands, and soul explodes. It’s a dynamic that cannot be explained, only felt. We, as Lady Bikers, wish certain men could appreciate our courage to share the open road and not "tax" our similar passion with discrimination.

So, dear Lady Bikers, expose yourselves truthfully and in your vivacious beauty stride atop your "iron" horse in protest to any thing which oppresses your feminine spirit or desire for the open road.
